Justin Birchmore embraces his birthplace

Sunday 1st February 2009
Justin Birchmore’s appreciation of fashion has been a life-long affair. It’s a penchant that stems from shopping throughout London’s high-end fashion houses throughout his twenties and extends to an appreciation of quality in all things.

Born in Launceston, Justin has always maintained a strong association with Tasmania through his many his relatives who reside in the region. After living in the varied capital cities of Sydney, London and Perth (Western Australia), opening Justin Paul represents a homecoming of sorts for the otherwise WA-based businessman. Justin’s parents, Alan and Jill, have a house in town and his brother, Rohan and his wife Sarah acquired, have restored and are now operating the city’s iconic brasserie, Pierre’s, having recently relocated to Launceston with their three boys.

Fashion aside, Justin brings with him a wealth of management experience.
Early in his career, his time as a stockbroker in the United Kingdom during the 1980’s saw him become one of the then youngest-ever registered representatives of the London Stock Exchange. Looking to broaden his horizons, he also dedicated some time to an account management role with one of the World’s prominent advertising firms.

While still based in London, Justin then assisted his father on the reconstruction and development of various Australian companies; some of them maturing to list on the Australian Stock Exchange. It’s an area that meshed well with his stockbroking background.

This, in turn, led Justin to return to Perth, where he has more recently focused on working with early stage companies. In short, he aims to develop smaller companies into larger ones; raising capital and offering corporate capacity that may otherwise be lacking in the business. This saw him become a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors at an earlier age than would normally be expected.

Outside of Justin Paul, the father-of-two is also actively involved with a Perth-based company that specialises in an emerging solar desalination technology and until very recently played a pivotal role in the start-up of an aquaculture company in Singapore.

Justin’s background also extends beyond the world of corporate management. He finds the time to sing with a Perth-based band; writing and recording their own music in a project that’s the result of long-standing relationships with friends including former Divinyl’s guitarist and Hall of Fame inductee, Mark McEntee.

He also maintains a strong sense of adventure. A few years ago, armed with nothing more than a litre of water each, Justin and nine friends undertook an arduous ten-day trek through Western Australia’s Pilbara region. As intended from the outset, the group lived without the provision of food or shelter and successfully navigated through the region’s challenging climate and terrain to a predetermined finishing point.

The idea behind Justin Paul was sparked just under two years ago and can be attributed in the first instance to a near fatal heart attack suffered by Justin’s father while he was in Launceston visiting family. The unexpected and hasty return to Launceston to be with his parents also served to remind Justin of Tasmania’s uncompromising beauty and growing levels of sophistication. With the assistance of one of Australia’s most cutting-edge fashion purveyors, he began work on what they agreed was an opportunity to bring new and greater volumes of high-end fashion from the Milan and Paris’ catwalks into Launceston for local and visiting customers. This would also allow him to remain close to his broader family and spend time in the region that shaped his early life.

“My parents grew up, met and married in Launceston,” said Justin. “My father was a former Tasmanian Amateur Golf Champion while my mother was raising significant funds for charity as a contestant in the state finals of the Miss Australia Quest.

“Until recently, my distinct memories of Tasmania were largely those of my grandparents’ front rooms, where the family would catch up every few years over seemingly endless cups of tea.

“It’s been really nice to rediscover the area and to see Launceston through more mature eyes. It’s a truly inviting and captivating part of the world. I have an apartment above the boutique, which will enable me to reconnect with my birthplace with great ease.”

Justin Paul opens its doors in mid January. High-resolution images are available for editorial and promotional purposes and selected stock can be accessed for photo shoots upon request. Justin Birchmore is available for interviews upon request.
