Launceston - the new style destination

Sunday 1st February 2009
Justin Paul is a new high-end fashion destination for women in Launceston aged thirty-plus. Located on George Street, the store is decidedly unique in that it affords local women the opportunity to truly define their sense of style and individuality with some of the most exciting purveyors of international haute couture.

Founder Justin Birchmore’s premise is inherently simple: “Justin Paul brings women in Launceston – and broader Tasmania, for that matter – the very best contemporary fashion from international fashion capital catwalks, set in a luxurious yet uniquely down-to-earth and approachable environment. Launceston women no longer have to travel to Melbourne or Sydney for such an extensive selection of exclusive brands.”

On offer are some of the world’s most exciting women’s fashion labels, including Kenzo, Jaeger, Marc Cain, Paule Ka, Gerard Darel, Cambio, Pablo and Firetrap. The store will also stock exclusive ranges of accessories; including contemporary handbags and jewellery sourced from a variety of Australian and International designers.

“I’m genuinely excited about establishing Justin Paul in Launceston,” said Justin. “Not only will it open up another alternative for women seeking high-quality fashion and possibly play a role in expanding the industry locally – it will also enable me to play a contributing role in the community in which I was born and, once again, be a part of.”

Justin is equally excited about the labels, themselves.

“What I love about Marc Cain for instance is that, producing very high-end, elegant clothing aside, the label clearly has its own unique interpretation on prevailing international fashion trends which is brave and exciting. I also love the fact that the German founders who created the label in Italy back in 1973 decided to invent ‘Marc Cain’ as a fictitious Italian couturier; presumably to give them some local credibility. It clearly worked.

“Alternatively, my impression of Jaeger from my earlier London years is one of true conservatism and uncompromising style. It’s an iconic British brand that’s been providing high-quality fashion to a diverse spread of clients from Marilyn Monroe through to Kate Moss throughout its 120-year history. More recently, I think they’ve created a new modern edge, which is something I find both refreshing and appealing.”

“Kenzo is a favourite and is truly original. It’s so easy to spot on the rack from the kaleidoscope of colour the ranges typically exhibit. The label originally hails from Japan, but didn’t take itself long to firmly cemented itself in the fashion capital of Paris, where it has been headquarted for much of its 30-odd year history. I love it.”

Fashion aside, Justin has set out to make the store a truly unique experience.
In this sense, its charm lies in its unmistakably luxurious fit out. Designed by local, award-winning architects Birrelli, the look and feel is akin to any of Europe’s high-end boutiques, namely those found in Paris’ Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré or Milan’s Via Montenapoleone – albeit much more down to earth and inviting.

Justin Paul is currently in the process of establishing a number of community-based partnerships and initiatives. The first of which being an association with the Tasmanian Turf Club, which will extend to Oaks Day, Launceston Cup day, the Summer Racing Carnival and other notable dates throughout the race calendar. These events could see the store showcase the works of both interstate and local milliners and the like.

As for other community-based initiatives: “I’m considering a range of opportunities at the moment. It would be great to somehow get behind local designers and the arts community, possibly in association with one of the region or state’s many educational institutions.”

The store adjoins Launceston’s iconic brasserie, Pierre’s, which is owned and operated by Justin’s brother and sister-in-law, Rohan & Sarah Birchmore.

Justin Paul opens its doors in mid January. High resolution images are available for editorial and promotional purposes and selected stock can be accessed for photo shoots upon request. Justin Birchmore is available for interviews upon request.
