Howard committed to Scout’s Australia!
Monday 7th May 2007
Prime Minister John Howard has last week announced 17.7 million dollar funding for Scout’s Australia in a quest to save our nations water.
At 1st Blackburn Scout’s Hall on Friday 4th May 2007, John Howard announced the year of the Scout and said the movement would receive $17.7 million for tanks at its 1600 halls across the country.
1947 Scout Halls nationally were envisaged to apply through Storm Water Preservation and their online application system for the Federal Government Community Water Grants which provide assistance of up to $50, 000, but with the announcement each Scout hall and activity centre will be provided with a water tank and filtration systems independent to the Community Water Grants.
Alisha Kay from Storm Water Preservation Australia has been highly involved with the Community Water Grants, writing numerous letters to prominent members of state and federal parliament regarding Scout’s Australia and their contribution to the community.
“Scout’s are so significant to our society and we can not only celebrate their past, but ensure their future success in a mission to help them be self sufficient in water usage. The new grant that John Howard announced today just shows how important Scout’s are seen in our society.” Alisha Kay says
The grant comes as the world scouting movement celebrates its 100th anniversary and one year ahead of the Australian scouting centenary. If Scout’s were independent in their water usage they would save the equivalent of the O’Shannassy reservoir over a four-year period. This is equivalent to 3000 Giga Litres of Water.
"This funding will assist the Scouts to generate significant water savings while at the same time providing a tangible and ongoing demonstration of actions we can all take to conserve our precious water resources," said a statement released by the Prime Minister's office.
Mr Howard said that "Scouting has become the largest youth development organization in the nation."
There are around 60,000 scouts currently registered in Australia, and more than 2 million people who have been involved in Scout’s Australia in the last century.
The Community Water Grants were originally aimed at school, sporting clubs, nursing homes and all community centres including Scout halls and activity centres. They total two hundred million dollars and are to help conserve our most precious and potentially scarce natural resource – water! These grants will allow schools to harvest rainwater effectively, sporting clubs to keep grounds at playing standards and nursing homes to maintain picturesque gardens and Round Three of the grants is currently open.
